Questions
Which part of the photo is kept?
The largest square that fits, taken from the centre. A portrait photo keeps its middle band, a landscape photo keeps its middle column.
Does it reduce the resolution?
Only if the image is bigger than 1400 pixels, which is where it stops. PNG stores every pixel exactly, so an uncapped circle cut from a 12-megapixel phone photo comes out around 12 MB — far larger than the original JPG, and useless as an avatar. Anything smaller than 1400 px is left completely untouched.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. The crop happens on a canvas inside your browser.
Is this the same as "crop image to square online"?
Yes. It also gets called "square crop" and "1:1 crop". They all describe this one job, and this page does it.
