Questions
Will the corners really be transparent?
Yes. The file is saved as PNG, which stores transparency, so the area outside the circle is genuinely empty rather than white. Put it on any background and the circle is all you will see.
Does it reduce the resolution?
Only if the image is bigger than 1400 pixels, which is where it stops. PNG stores every pixel exactly, so an uncapped circle cut from a 12-megapixel phone photo comes out around 12 MB — far larger than the original JPG, and useless as an avatar. Anything smaller than 1400 px is left completely untouched.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. The crop happens on a canvas inside your browser.
Is this the same as "make image circle"?
Yes. It also gets called "circle crop" and "round image with transparent background". They all describe this one job, and this page does it.
